– Spain is a Western democracy and its Catalan citizens vote frequently. In fact, counting with European, national, regional and municipal elections they have voted 6 times in the last five years.<\/p>\n

– In the last regional elections, the pro-secession parties decided to unite around a single issue –independence– and not only failed to obtain a majority of votes, but also lost votes in relation to the previous elections. Surveys, including those paid by the separatists, show that support for independence is a minority and declining.<\/p>\n

– The autonomous region of Catalonia is not \u00aboppressed\u00bb. It is one of the most prosperous regions of Spain and its citizens enjoy a high standard of living and one of the highest degrees of self-government in any region of Europe.<\/p>\n

– The party that traditionally led the regional government of Catalonia has used over the last 30 years public money to promote a separatist agenda through education and local media and has been illegally funded with a corrupt scheme in which contractors had to pay bribes at least 3% of any public work.<\/p>\n

– The region of Catalonia has never historically existed as an independent political entity. It was part of the Kingdom of Aragon, which merged dynamically with the Kingdom of Castile in 1492 to create the Spain we know today. There is no \u00abunion\u00bb, as in the UK. Catalonia is Spain what Rousillon is to France or Cornwall to England.<\/p>\n

– Spain is a parliamentary democracy, with a constitution that can be amended. A vote on territorial secession would require such amendment and the support of a qualified majority of Spaniards.<\/p>\n

– No country or international organization (with the exception of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in Venezuela) has supported this movement.<\/p>\n

Then, you will surely ask yourself why the fuss?<\/p>\n

As the economy improves and support for independence declines, the separatists fear \u00ablosing the train\u00bb and, breaking with Spanish and regional laws, have embarked on a campaign to present the central government as \u00abevil\u00bb for not allowing a regional referendum that does not comply with the constitution (widely approved throughout Spain, including Catalonia)<\/strong>. This Machiavellian noise also hides the regional corruption scandals and tries to present the separatists as victims in the next general elections.<\/p>\n

– Espa\u00f1a es una democracia occidental y sus ciudadanos catalanes votan con frecuencia. De hecho, entre elecciones europeas, nacionales, regionales y municipales han votado 6 veces en los \u00faltimos cinco a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

– En las \u00faltimas elecciones regionales, los partidos pro-secesi\u00f3n decidieron unirse en torno a un solo tema –independencia– y no s\u00f3lo no lograron obtener la mayor\u00eda de los votos, sino que tambi\u00e9n perdieron votos en relaci\u00f3n con las elecciones anteriores. Las encuestas, incluso las pagadas por los separatistas, demuestran que el apoyo a la independencia es una minor\u00eda y en declive.<\/p>\n

– La regi\u00f3n aut\u00f3noma de Catalu\u00f1a no est\u00e1 \u00aboprimida\u00bb. Es una de las regiones m\u00e1s pr\u00f3speras de Espa\u00f1a y sus ciudadanos disfrutan de un alto nivel de vida y uno de los m\u00e1s altos grados de autogobierno de cualquier regi\u00f3n de Europa.<\/p>\n

– El partido el cual tradicionalmente dirig\u00eda el gobierno regional de Catalu\u00f1a ha utilizado durante los \u00faltimos 30 a\u00f1os dinero p\u00fablico para promover una agenda separatista a trav\u00e9s de la educaci\u00f3n y los medios locales y se ha financiado ilegalmente con un esquema corrupto en el que los contratistas tuvieron que pagar sobornos al menos del 3% de cualquier trabajo p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n

– La regi\u00f3n de Catalu\u00f1a nunca ha existido como una entidad pol\u00edtica independiente. Form\u00f3 parte del Reino de Arag\u00f3n, que se fusion\u00f3 din\u00e1sticamente con el Reino de Castilla en 1492 para crear la Espa\u00f1a que conocemos hoy. No hay \u00abuni\u00f3n\u00bb, como en el Reino Unido. Catalu\u00f1a es Espa\u00f1a lo que Rousillon es a Francia o Cornualles a Inglaterra.<\/p>\n

– Espa\u00f1a es democracia parlamentaria, con una constituci\u00f3n que puede ser enmendada. Una votaci\u00f3n sobre la secesi\u00f3n territorial requerir\u00eda tal enmienda y el apoyo de una mayor\u00eda calificada de espa\u00f1oles.<\/p>\n

– Ning\u00fan pa\u00eds u organizaci\u00f3n internacional (con la excepci\u00f3n de Nicol\u00e1s Maduro en Venezuela) ha apoyado este movimiento.<\/p>\n

Entonces, os preguntar\u00e9is seguramente \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 el alboroto?<\/p>\n

A medida que la econom\u00eda mejora y el apoyo a la independencia disminuye, los separatistas temen \u00abperderse el tren\u00bb y, rompiendo con las leyes espa\u00f1olas y regionales, se han embarcado en una campa\u00f1a para presentar al gobierno central como \u00abmalvado\u00bb por no permitir un refer\u00e9ndum regional que no cumple con la constituci\u00f3n (ampliamente aprobada en toda Espa\u00f1a, incluida Catalu\u00f1a).
